Caterpillar (NI) Limited is Europe’s largest manufacturer of diesel generator sets and has recently expanded operations to include production of wheeled material handlers and articulated truck axles.

Background

Design, manufacturing and sales activities are undertaken locally in Northern Ireland across four locations: Larne, Monkstown and two facilities at the Springvale Industrial Park in Belfast.

What Caterpillar (NI) did

As the largest Electric Power Division portfolio within the company, Caterpillar (NI) Limited initiated a programme in 2014 to reduce its environmental impact with specific emphasis on energy. The programme aligned with Caterpillar’s Sustainability Value and involved identifying opportunities to improve energy performance without incurring excessive capital costs.

The key issues addressed through this programme were to improve energy efficiency of natural resources which consequently meant a reduction in greenhouse gases and subsequent environmental impacts.

Areas of focus included: reduction in normalised energy consumption, installation of new lighting technology, baseload energy management, collaborative action with logistics partners develop innovative solutions through freight optimisation, and identification of high energy consumers.

Through this programme, Caterpillar (NI) Limited has been able to demonstrate commitment to its Sustainability Value and through the execution of supporting programmes realise significant energy reductions and long-term financial savings.

The outcomes and impacts

  • Baseload Energy Savings equated to £72,000
  • Reduction in CO2 emissions of 59.5 tonnes
  • 40% reduction in weekend energy consumption
  • Reduced its energy consumption by 5.4% in the last 12 months, which is equivalent to 1,659T CO2.
