Action Cancer is Northern Ireland’s leading local cancer charity. It provides the following services:
- a unique breast-screening service to more than 10,000 women
- more than 5,000 health checks, primarily to men
- more than 3,000 Therapeutic Support sessions
It also engages with more than 20,000 school children annually, educating on the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
What Corporate Responsibility means to us
While a charity, Action Cancer is also a sizeable business: it is an SME that employs nearly 90 staff and has an annual income circa £4m, of which more than £1.25m is derived from its 19 retail stores.
To Action Cancer, Corporate Responsibility is not just something that is nice to do but is core to how it operates, how it transacts business, and how it acts and behaves. A values-based business, the impact the charity has on the People, the Community and the Environment of Northern Ireland is assessed in every decision it makes and is measured in every action it takes.
With its own CSR policy, Action Plan, and cross-departmental implementation team, Corporate Responsibility is at the heart of the charity—a core Value understood and lived out by all its staff and volunteers and considered critical to its success. Since actively embracing Corporate Responsibility, all outputs and performance indicators (including staff retention) have significantly improved, and unit costs have been reduced considerably. As a measurement, the charity has recently won a number of major business awards for its people and business practices, and it is one of very few organisations in Northern Ireland who hold Investors in People Gold Champions and IiP Health and Wellbeing accreditation.
