The business issue

Danske Bank Group has made a commitment to reduce its overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and has set ambitious targets for its banks, located in numerous European countries.

What Danske Bank UK did

Danske Bank UK has been purchasing green electricity (generated by wind turbines) for all its properties for many years. The focus in Northern Ireland was more about further reducing energy consumption & costs and therefore freeing up finite resources of green electricity for use by other companies.

The refurbishment of the Head Office Building gave them the opportunity to:

  • Replace oil-fired boilers with new, high-efficiency, modular gas-fired boilers
  • Install 200 Solar PV panels
  • Install more energy-efficient lighting, with daylight and PIR control
  • Install Variable-speed Drives for motors on fans and pumps
  • Install more modern and efficient Heat Pumps
  • Install sensors at all WCs and wash-hand basins
  • Initiatives in other properties include:

  • Installation of Solar PV Panels at 12 properties (9 completed)
  • Roll out LED lighting installations – ten properties to date, with more to follow.
  • Installation of high-efficiency, gas-fired boilers (where gas is available)
  • Impacts

  • A predicted yield from Solar PV panel installations of 145,000kWhr per annum
  • This will make green energy available for use by other companies, which will result in a reduction of 88 tonnes of CO2 gas emissions per annum
  • New Head Office boilers reducing energy consumption for heating by 241,00kWhr per year (22%), reducing CO2 emissions by 146 tonnes per annum (48%), with cost savings of >£25K per annum
  • These and other initiatives helped Danske Bank UK to be the only company in the financial sector to achieve the Gold Award in the 2015 NI Environmental benchmarking Survey carried out by Business in the Community
  • Testimonial

“Achieving energy savings and reducing our carbon footprint, by using differing renewable energy sources and energy-efficient equipment, helps us drive towards creating a cleaner environment and helps the overall cost base of the Bank, thus helping us to deliver on both our society and stakeholder objectives.”
