Background

It is a £1.4 billion business employing over 13,000 people across facilities in Northern Ireland, England, Ireland, Holland and France. The company supplies Moy Park branded and own label chicken products to leading retailers and foodservice providers throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe and is the industry leading manufacturer of organic, free-range and higher welfare chicken and turkey. In June 2015 Moy Park joined the JBS group, largest protein processor and the second largest food company in the world.

Moy Park’s CR is set against three pillars – People, Planet and Place.

  • People – Moy Park’s remarkable business growth could only be achieved through its people. It has established and Ethical Leadership Forum, driving standards throughout our supply chain and published a Modern Slavery Statement. It launched an innovative ‘Moy Support’ suite of employee wellbeing programmes and its Employee Engagement Survey results have improved over the past four years. It has the lowest labour turnover and absence rates in the sector.
  • Planet – A proactive approach to the environment has seen the company reduce electricity and thermal energy consumption, as well as reducing water usage. It achieved the top ‘Platinum’ level result for the fourth consecutive year in the Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey and was awarded “Waste Management Team of the Year” by Sustainable Ireland
  • Place – The company is part of the Food Safety Forum, a forward-looking panel of industry and independent academic experts. Its Campylobacter investment in R&D has produced patented technology, and has demonstrably reduced Campylobacter through the supply chain. Moy Park has core community partnerships with The Prince’s Trust, Young Enterprise and Young Farmers, helping disadvantaged young people into work, promoting careers education in schools and the rural community.

    Impacts and Outcomes

  • Health and safety performance – Safety Index score improved from 13.5 (2011) to 1.17 (2016)
  • Overall Electricity intensity reduced by 8% in 2016
  • Overall Thermal Energy intensity reduced by 6% in 2016
  • Overall Water Use intensity reduced by 4% in 2016
  • Reduced CO2e by c.6,500 tonnes in 2016 – the equivalent to taking over 3,000 cars off the road per year
  • Zero waste to landfill maintained
  • Farm Africa charity partnership raised £95,000
