It has supported a wide range of initiatives in recent years including:

BookTrust – a grass-roots project promoting reading for pleasure in communities and families across Belfast to ensure that children and young people have the best start in life. This three-year project with its three-tiered focus – on babies, toddlers and teenagers – is seeking to help 3,000 families, 4,000 primary school children and 600 post-primary school children annually to develop a life-long love of learning.

StemAware Engineering workshops – enabled around 300 young people to develop creative solutions to address environmental and citizenship issues; imagining Harbour-life in 25 years’ time, using the popular Minecraft gaming technology.

Time to Code – in 2017/’18, more than 530 children were empowered to develop the basics of coding assisted by 51 business volunteers; raising the need for coding to be included in the NI educational curriculum.

Jenni Barkley, Communications and Corporate Responsibility Manager, explains: “At Belfast Harbour, we are aware of our need to invest in the young people of Northern Ireland. We want to do this in impactful, inspirational and fun ways to inspire them to be the best they can be, but also ensure that those coming out of schools and universities here can enter the workplace informed, educated and skilled.”
