Translink is Northern Ireland’s main public transport provider. Bus and rail services provide a sustainable transport solution as part of a shared mobility model for Northern Ireland.
Background
Translink carries around 80 million passengers journeys every year. It is a major employer; a major land manager; and a significant user of energy, fuel, water and a wide range of consumables and other resources.
What Translink did
Translink’s five-year Strategy sets out its Vision ‘To be your first choice for travel in Northern Ireland’. In recent years, it has developed a range of corporate responsibility projects and initiatives that have made it one of Northern Ireland’s leading businesses in this area. A key focus of its Corporate Responsibility Strategy is ‘Go Eco’ which focusses on environmental performance.
Translink recognises the importance of the circular economy and aims to capitalise on opportunities to develop innovative solutions to improve resource efficiency, and reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover materials.
Translink’s train and bus services, by their very nature, are a more sustainable option than the private car. Its Corporate Vision places sustainability at the heart of its business and as a result, actions to reduce both Translink’s impact and the impact of Northern Ireland as a whole on Climate Change.
Translink promotes the environmental benefit of its bus and rail services as a better, more sustainable travel solution for modern healthy living through excellent customer service, innovative marketing and network design.
With an extensive footprint across Northern Ireland, Translink recognises it has a significant role to play in protecting biodiversity. It has a dedicated Translink Biodiversity Strategy and works to protect and enhance the biodiversity value of its land and infrastructure under its control.
Impacts and Outcomes
- 80 million passenger journeys were carried in 2017, reducing road congestion and car pollution
- Through patronage on Translink services, some 60,000 cars are removed from the roads in NI on a daily basis – this contributes to a reduction in the overall carbon emissions of NI of around 50,000 tonnes pa
- Its Energy Strategy establishes a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger Km by 20% by 2025 (compared to 2008 figures) and an objective to Introduce low carbon vehicles to the fleet by 2020 via Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT)
