International Day for Biological Diversity was marked this year by a visit to Henry Brothers in Magherafelt on 22 May by visitors from 10 local businesses. Attendees, who were keen to learn how they could address the biodiversity impacts of their own organisations, were given a guided tour of Henry Brothers’ Nature Park by Deborah Madden, Environmental and Quality Advisor for Henry Brothers and Conor Bush from Ulster Wildlife who supports the company in their biodiversity work.

The 26-acre Nature Park has been developed by Henry Brothers over many years and includes farmland pasture, woodland and open water. It incorporates a wide range of features aimed at conservation, while also facilitating educational visits through trails, interpretation and teaching opportunities.

A key element of Henry Bros’ biodiversity strategy is its work with local schools through the Nature Park Education Programme. Delivered in partnership with Ulster Wildlife, the programme provides a learning opportunity away from the classroom and has involved over 480 pupils to date. In addition to gaining the benefits of a positive outdoor experience, pupils are able to assist with collecting valuable information on species for reporting to the Centre for Environmental Data & Reporting (CEDaR).

As well as receiving an insight to the possibilities for companies to have an impact on biodiversity, visitors on the day were introduced to the Business & Biodiversity Charter. Delivered by Business in the Community in partnership with Ulster Wildlife, the Charter provides a framework to help any organisation structure its biodiversity work whilst engaging with employees and the local community, and gives recognition for achievement through a series of stepped awards at Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Recent recipients of the Charter include Translink and Seagate Technology – both at Platinum level.
