Background

The circular economy is an economic model where materials never become waste. Instead of the traditional “take–make–waste” linear model, a circular economy designs products and services so that resources are kept in use for as long as possible, then reused, repaired, refurbished, remanufactured or recycled at the end of their life.

It is built around three core principles:

  • Eliminate waste and pollution by design – thinking about the full life cycle of products from the outset
  • Circulate products and materials at their highest value for as long as possible
  • Regenerate nature, for example by supporting renewable energy, regenerative agriculture, or restoring ecosystems

For businesses, the circular economy is not just an environmental concept – it is increasingly a strategic, financial and reputational issue. The circular economy helps businesses cut costs, reduce risk, meet climate goals and stay competitive by designing out waste and keeping resources in use.
