Polymer Packaging Network
Business in the Community NI’s Polymer Packaging Network, in association with WRAP, is convening a round table event to bring together those with interests in plastic packaging to consider the opportunities and challenges for the packaging supply chain in a Northern Ireland circular economy.
27 Mar 2018
09:30 - 12:30
The MAC, Belfast
Much has been achieved by group members and others in addressing sustainability for plastics, but the recent uplift in the focus on plastics by governments and society in general presents new opportunity for the sector and supply chains.
WRAP’s Plastics Sector Specialist, Bernard Chase, will provide an overview of the current challenges and opportunities for the sector while Greiner Packaging’s Chief Executive, Philip Woolsey, will provide a view from industry. The event will be chaired by Rob Hardeman, Chair of The MATRIX Panel which advises Government on R&D in the science and technology sectors in Northern Ireland. This round table meeting aims to identify the key areas of opportunity for developing the circular economy for plastics and bring economic benefit to Northern Ireland.
WRAP and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation have formed a partnership to develop and lead an ambitious UK initiative on plastics. This will involve collaborative action and commitment by businesses, industry, governments, local authorities, NGOs, media and society at large, to re-define what is possible and create a plastic system that works – a circular economy where plastic is valued and doesn’t pollute the environment.
With an initial focus on plastic packaging, it will aim to:
- Eliminate unnecessary and problematic single-use plastic packaging
- Make sure all plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable
- Significantly increase the collection and recycling of plastic packaging
- Increase recycled content in plastic packaging to drive demand for recycled material
- Impassion and enable citizens to play their part in reducing plastic packaging waste and litter
