Clean coast volunteers sweep into Newcastle

It was a clean sweep earlier this week as Phoenix Natural Gas and its construction partner Kier joined forces to take part in a beach clean along Newcastle Strand.

The clean, supported by the Marine Conservation Trust and Keep NI Beautiful, saw the volunteers work to clear over 73kgs of waste and litter from the coastline in just a few hours.

Adrian McNeilly, Health & Safety Manager at Phoenix Natural Gas was one of the volunteers on the day, he said: “Phoenix Natural Gas is actively engaged in a corporate social responsibility programme which seeks to give back to the communities which we serve.

“We are fortunate to have areas of outstanding beauty right across Northern Ireland and as we extend the natural gas network into Newcastle the opportunity for us to get hands on and carry out practical work to reduce the impact of litter on the coastline here was the perfect fit.  The volunteers from both organisations worked hard and it was very rewarding to see the small difference we were able to make.”

Rozy Gray, Environmental Advisor from leading construction group Kier said: “As a business we believe that we have an important part to play in helping communities prosper and we were delighted to work alongside Phoenix Natural Gas to contribute to maintaining the beautiful coastline along Newcastle Beach.”

Phoenix Natural Gas began work on the extension of its natural gas network to 13 towns across East Down in 2016, providing access to natural gas for a further 28,000 properties.
