Henderson Group goes ‘green’ to help local schools grow
The Sales and Marketing team at Henderson Group undertook a unique ‘greenhouse challenge’ to help local primary schools
A team of 40 volunteers from the Henderson Group rolled up their sleeves on Friday 10 March and spent the day building two eco-friendly greenhouses for local primary schools, St Teresa’s Primary School in West Belfast and Ashgrove Primary School in Newtownabbey.
The challenge, which was organised in partnership with Business in the Community, involved the employees splitting into two teams. Each team was given raw materials including 1,500 bottles collected by the children and a set of instructions on how to construct a greenhouse.
The finished greenhouses were then judged by a panel made up of an award-winning garden designer, Ian Price and Business in the Community’s Head of Environment, Ian Nuttall. It was a close call, but after much deliberation the team who carried out their construction at Ashgrove Primary School was declared the winner due to their teamwork, the finished product and their feedback presentation to the judges.
Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing at Henderson Group explains: “We’ve had a fantastic day working with the pupils and teachers at the schools, and it gave our team an opportunity to bond and learn something new! Both groups did a stellar job in constructing the greenhouses, and the judges had a tough job on their hands deciding the winner!
“Both schools have plans to grow plants in the greenhouses and we are delighted to have been able to help construct them. The challenge was a wonderful team building opportunity and I would encourage any businesses who are looking to host a teambuilding day to consider doing something like this.
“A challenge like this allows us to get into the heart of our communities; building relationships with schools, and hopefully leaving a legacy.”
Helen Bowman, Head of Communications, Business in the Community added: “We are delighted to work with the Henderson Group on this project and I would like to take this opportunity to commend everyone involved for all their hard work and effort. It’s great to see a local responsible business get involved in the community in such a practical way.
“Not only was it an excellent opportunity for team building, but it also enabled employees to engage with the young people and give back to their local communities. Both the team members and the school children alike really enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot on the day.”
