Tell us about how you reward your staff

Our staff work hard all year round and we want them to have a good work-life balance. Spending quality time with friends and family is an integral part of that, so what better way to help our staff achieve a great balance by organising a fun day out where family and friends are welcome!

As our employees work and live throughout Northern Ireland, it was important for us to source a location for our family fun day that was central for all. We chose Todd’s Leap, an outdoor activity centre located off the M1 at The Ballygawley roundabout, it’s well signposted so it’s easy to find, but we also put up some Lidl family fun day signage so our guests wouldn’t get lost.

What happens at the family fun day

As the demographic of our employees ranges from 18 to 65 years it was important for us to have a family fun day that can cater for all. We welcome a lot of young families, with differing needs, so we offer over 30 different activities for our guests to take part in including: slime and balloon making; magic shows; bouncy castles; clay pigeon shooting; archery; a climbing wall and zip line; and blindfold driving to name a few!

For those who prefer ‘chilled out’ activities, we offered spa treatments in the peace and tranquillity of the Todd’s Leap log cabins.

To keep our guests fed and hydrated we offer an unlimited BBQ, drinks, popcorn, candyfloss, slushies, ice creams and lollies. Even the vending machine is filled with Lidl products where guests can get their favourite goodies free-of-charge. The children love this!

Is the family fun day a fundraising initiative?

No, we don’t raise funds during the fun day. However, we extend an invite to staff, volunteers and families from our charity partner, NSPCC, as we recognise that they work hard and give up their own time to volunteer and fundraise for the charity. Our employees are dedicated to raising awareness and fundraising for NSPCC throughout the year, so this fun day is solely for them to enjoy with their family and friends, and to celebrate playing their part in Lidls progression and success.

How often do the fun days take place?

We organise our family fun day at Todd’s Leap once a year, but we also offer lots of other events for our employees to enjoy throughout the year. This ranges from visits to trampoline parks, Christmas parties, Lidl’s Got Talent, go karting, and other team building events

We also have a Sports and Social Committee. Our employees are invited to join and encouraged to start up and run a club. The committee will contribute 50% of costs and supports the club with posters, communications and any other help they may require. Our clubs include golf, walking, hiking, cycling, running, 5-a-side football, yoga and even a choir!

Why is it important to reward your staff in this way?

Lidl is committed to looking after the wellbeing of its employees. Our Core Values are Trust, Respect, Responsibility, and Recognition. Our employees go over and above on so many of these levels that taking time to make an extra effort to show our staff how important they are to us and how much we appreciate them is paramount to the growth of our business.
