Michael Smyth

GRAHAM is a privately owned company operating in the construction, asset management and project investment market. With earliest records dating back to 1798 it currently has 2,300 employees across the UK and Ireland.

Michael is an alumni of Queens University Belfast where he obtained a BSSc in Psychology and an MSc in Occupational Psychology. Michael is also a Chartered Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a registered practitioner with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Michael joined GRAHAM in 1991 and has held positions in people development and generalist Human Resources. Michael managed the company business unit which operated DEL initiatives to tackle youth and long terms unemployment. Michael is currently responsible for the overall HR strategy within the business, with particular focus on leadership & talent development, the GRAHAM School of Excellence for graduates & apprenticeships, employee engagement, as well as health and wellbeing. Michael focuses on turning leading edge human resource research into viable business realities that impact the bottom line.

Michael champions the skills agenda at Board level and is very passionate about tackling social inequalities, such as endemic long-term unemployment and homelessness through local community partnerships and heads up the organisation’s award-winning Social Impact team.

Michael was central in GRAHAM receiving recognition from the Equality Commission for their innovative and best practice approach which has led to them winning a number of prestigious national awards for equality and diversity. He also spearheaded the companies’ achievement of the IIP Platinum and Wellbeing Awards leading the company to be viewed as an innovator within Wellbeing – winning the IIP Wellbeing Initiative of the Year in 2018.
