DLJ Water showcases low carbon transformation of Aghanloo Wastewater Treatment Works

NI Water, DLJ Water and Tetra Tech, welcomed members of the Northern Ireland branch of the Institute of Water for a technical talk and guided tour of the newly upgraded Aghanloo Wastewater Treatment Works, which has now been officially handed over following completion.

The event introduced more than 60 delegates to the project’s central theme, Engineering with Nature, which has shaped the replacement of the original 1970’s works with a modern, reed bed based treatment system designed to meet local needs through to 2046.

During the presentation, DLJ Water outlined the design approach, construction methodology and operational principles of the Phragmifiltre® reed bed technology delivered alongside Tetra Tech for client NI Water. Attendees heard how the 3,000m² wetland system contains more than 10,000 reeds and has been constructed entirely within the footprint of the existing site.

Delegates then visited the works to see the system in operation. The tour provided a close look at the reed beds, site layout and the environmental measures that support its long term performance. The project team explained how the natural process removes the need for energy intensive mechanical treatment. By making full use of the site’s characteristics and landholding, the upgrade delivers a passive treatment solution with minimal energy input, reduced operational demands and lower long term costs.

The upgraded Aghanloo Wastewater Treatment Works has now been officially handed over to NI Water, with the natural treatment system due to come fully into operation later in 2026, supporting a future proof wastewater service for the surrounding area.

Talking about the sustainable process, Michael Donnelly, NI Water Senior Project Manager, said: “NI Water is committed to adopting sustainable approaches to wastewater treatment where possible. The new eco-friendly system installed at Aghanloo has been tried and tested throughout Europe and is widely used in rural areas where sufficient land exists to construct a series of reed beds.

“By letting nature take its course, the new treatment works will treat the wastewater to the required environmental standard in a much more efficient way. By incorporating fewer mechanical components into the treatment works, maintenance requirements will be reduced, resulting in operational cost savings for NI Water.

“We were delighted to showcase the site as part of this Institute of Water visit.”
