The Challenge
In 2023, Dowds achieved a Silver rating in Business in the Community’s (BITC) Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey (NIEBS). It was a strong foundation, but it also revealed something more important: a clear view of where we needed to improve.
The survey acted as a mirror. It highlighted gaps in our data, consistency, and approach, showing that while good work was happening across the business, it wasn’t yet fully connected, measured, or strategically aligned.
Rather than seeing this as a limitation, we recognised it as an opportunity.
The NIEBS benchmarking process became the catalyst for change. It provided not just a score, but a roadmap. We used its insights to reshape our sustainability strategy, placing data, accountability, and people-led action at its heart. Crucially, we didn’t treat this as a top-down initiative. Instead, we embedded responsibility across all levels of the organisation.
The Shift: Powered by People
At the centre of our transformation was a simple belief: meaningful change happens when everyone is involved.
We established an ESG committee and wider taskforce, bringing together voices from across the organisation. This wasn’t driven from the top down—it was shaped from within. By empowering our people and embedding accountability across all levels, sustainability became part of everyday thinking, not a separate initiative. Ongoing learning and development ensured our teams understood both the impact of their actions and their role in driving change.
This collective approach created momentum, accountability, and a shared sense of purpose.
The Engine: Driven by Data
Alongside this cultural shift, we transformed how we used data to inform decisions. Smart metering across our three offices gave us real-time visibility of energy consumption, while a move to green electricity tariffs, and solar generation at our HQ, reduced our environmental footprint. We introduced an EV policy, repositioned site teams closer to projects to cut travel emissions, and expanded our carbon reporting to include scope 3, giving us a far more complete picture of our impact.
Many of these actions were already happening across the business, we’ve simply strengthened how we capture, measure and report them.
The Outcome: A Step Change to Platinum
Within a year, Dowds moved from Silver to Platinum in the BITC NIEBS.
But the true impact goes beyond the rating. The journey has strengthened our reputation as a responsible, forward-thinking business, improved our ability to win work, and fostered a genuine sense of pride and ownership across our teams. It has reshaped how we operate, embedding sustainability into our decisions, our processes, and our culture.
What started as a benchmarking exercise became a catalyst for transformation and a foundation for continuous improvement. Because for us, success isn’t just measured in projects delivered; it’s measured in how we deliver them, and the impact we leave behind.
“The NI Environmental Benchmarking Survey gave us the clarity and direction we needed to progress our ESG journey – embedding sustainability into the way we run our business every day.” George Mimnagh, Sustainability Manager, Dowds
