Aimee Brown, Environmental Analyst, Encircs

What subjects did you enjoy at school that supported your career path?

Geography & Biology – I studied these along with French at A-Level.

Did you study at university or higher education?

Yes

What course did you study?

Masters in Geology.

What does a typical day or week in your role look like?

At Encirc we manufacture glass bottles and jars for the food and beverage industry. A typical day in my role involves managing our sustainability and environmental data, helping the business run more sustainably, and supporting with projects to reduce our environmental impact and CO₂ emissions. This week, I’ve been submitting environmental data to regulators, finalising our annual Sustainability report, supporting as a mentor at a SistersIn, and speaking at an event sharing tips with other businesses on practical sustainability initiatives. Every day is different, and it’s rewarding to see the impact of our work.

What part of your job do you find most interesting or exciting?

Seeing individuals and teams within the business take the lead with sustainable initiatives, and seeing measurable results – whether that be a reduction in CO₂ emissions, waste or water and energy consumption! Seeing these outcomes reaffirms that we are making the right choices and demonstrates how sustainability initiatives can reduce a business’s environmental impact.

What advice would you give to pupils who are interested in a career in sustainability?

Careers in sustainability can pop up in places you might not expect. I always wanted a career in sustainability but never imagined it would be in the manufacturing industry. There are so many different pathways – whether it’s business, engineering, law, marketing, technology or industry – so explore all the options. You might discover a role you never knew existed but that’s perfect for you.
