Did you study at university or higher education?
Yes
What course did you study?
BEng Clean Technology at Ulster University, MSc Environmental Engineering at Queens University Belfast
What does a typical day or week in your role look like?
My week varies, my main job is to calculate how much energy houses and commercial building emit by creating a digital twin of it. I would then talk to a range of different people like the architect, head engineer and equipment supplier regarding the design of the Building. I often go on site visits to different areas so its great exposure and has definitely helped develop my social skills. Being a chartered Energy Engineer I’m often involved in training any new graduates.
What part of your job do you find most interesting or exciting?
Everything is connected. From the type of wall you would like to build to whether you would like a air source heat pump or solar panels-What i find most interesting is the end result of the energy calculations. The software essentially is able to determine how cosy someone’s house is and can help design it in such a way that they can have low energy usage and lower energy bills.
What advice would you give to pupils who are interested in a career in sustainability?
Sustainability is a massive sector so don’t be afraid to get involved and make sure you focus on something you enjoy, the bonus is you are saving the world at the same time.
