Annual business cross-sector environmental benchmarking and insight survey opens in 25th year

Organisations of all sizes and from all sectors in Northern Ireland are being called to take part in the 25th annual NI Environmental Benchmarking Survey, run by responsible business network Business in the Community Northern Ireland (BITCNI).

The Survey is an online self-disclosure questionnaire which looks at environmental management and performance, circular economy and resource use, waste and biodiversity. The process of completing the Survey, and the score this generates, allows an organisation to see clearly what it’s doing right, see improvements over time, and identify areas that need action.

The results and associated report, released in November, allows an organisation to compare itself to others in its sector and across other sectors and provides more general insight and analysis on environmental activity across Northern Ireland.

The Survey opens for submissions on 26 April and the deadline is Tuesday 28 June.

100 organisations took part in 2022, with Spirit Aerosystems taking the overall top performer spot and Technidrive Ltd achieving the highest ranking amongst small business submissions.

Kieran Harding, Managing Director, BITCNI: “The Survey is regarded as a positive influencer that acts a catalyst for continuous improvement and as a result, typically we see companies improving their scores over time.

“It’s important to note that the Survey isn’t a competition. It allows an organisation to compare itself to itself over time and helps to identify and address areas for improvement. It’s also an opportunity to publicly recognise and applaud those organisations that are willing to be transparent about all things ‘green’ in the name of improvement, and to inspire others.”

The Survey is sponsored by leading food company Moy Park who has partnered with BITCNI on the project for seven years.

Declan Cunningham, Head of Sustainability and Risk Management, Moy Park said: “Our mission is to create better food for everyone sustainably from farm to fork. To make this ambition a reality, we have created a clear pathway to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. We are keen to motivate, encourage and inspire others on similar journeys and so we are proud to continue to sponsor the NI Environmental Benchmarking Survey and shine a light on those organisations and businesses who are committed to environmental excellence.”

Participating in the NI Environmental Benchmarking Survey (or the version for organisations with under 25 employees – the Small Business Survey) is free of charge and open to NI organisations from all sectors.

The results will be revealed on 15 November this year.
