Lord Timpson, Minister of State for Prisons in the UK, was among guests at the launch at Hydebank Wood Secure College.

The Bridge will bring together senior business representatives from the private sector and provide a network of support to address the employment barriers experienced by those leaving the prison system and looking for work.

Speaking at the launch, Naomi Long said:

“Employment is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce reoffending and support rehabilitation.  Having a job provides more than a wage — it gives people purpose, identity, and a sense of belonging.  It allows individuals to see themselves not through the lens of their past, but through their potential to contribute to society.

“Employment builds self-esteem and financial independence, reducing the pressures that can lead people back into offending. It also strengthens families, rebuilds trust within communities and helps break the cycle of offending across generations.  When individuals succeed after release, communities become safer, and the benefits ripple through our society — fewer victims, stronger families, and more inclusive workplaces.”

The Minister continued:

“The Bridge Employers’ Forum brings together employers from across sectors to share best practice, address barriers and provide real pathways into employment for those leaving custody.  It represents a growing partnership between government, employers and the voluntary sector — all working together to ensure that people who want to change their lives have the support and opportunity to do so.

“By connecting business with rehabilitation, The Bridge helps build a more inclusive economy where everyone has the chance to succeed.”

Minister Long went on to pay tribute to Lord Timpson for his example and tireless advocacy for employing people with convictions. She also thanked Trevor Annon and Lorna McAdoo, Co-Chairs of the Employers’ Forum, for their leadership and vision.

“Getting people back into work is crucial for preventing reoffending and helping them build new lives away from crime. I’ve seen firsthand how colleagues in the Northern Ireland Prison Service support offenders, both while they are in prison and once they are released from custody.

“The launch of the Employers’ Forum by Justice Minister Naomi Long will also clearly put this objective at the heart of its work, and is a great example of government and business working together to make our streets safer.”
