We are deeply concerned by the shocking scenes of unrest in Belfast and beyond last night, which have brought fear and distress to many people across Northern Ireland, and our thoughts are with those who have been affected.

Business in the Community condemns the violence, intimidation and the targeting of people who live in our communities, work in our businesses and are trying to raise their families to build a strong society in Northern Ireland.

Racism, extreme disturbance, vigilantism and the destruction of property have no place in our society.

Business in the Community plays its role in promoting inclusion to ensure everyone can live and thrive here. Societal disruption goes against everything we stand for and we are determined to work closely with business and the community in supporting Northern Ireland in its efforts towards peace and stability; common goals for most of our society.

These behaviours do not exist in isolation. They reflect attitudes that can also show up in our workplaces and wider society. There should be no tolerance for this, whether in public or at work.

Employers and business leaders can be an important voice for hope. Responsible leadership is always important, but even more so when times are challenging. Practical actions such as checking on people more actively, providing flexibility in working patterns and offering extra support is vital.

Business in the Community stands together, united with those who have suffered or who are feeling vulnerable at this time.
