Translink Boosts Biodiversity with Fresh Design on Green-Roof Bus Shelters

Translink has unveiled new in-house designed signage for its green-roof bus shelters on Belfast’s Shankill Road, making the shelters even more eye-catching while promoting biodiversity.

The designs, created by Translink’s own design team, feature bright flowers and butterflies to reflect the wildflower roofs above and bring an extra splash of colour to the streetscape. Each sign also includes a QR code, giving passengers and the wider community an easy way to learn more about Translink’s Biodiversity Strategy and the steps being taken to protect nature across the transport network.

This latest enhancement builds on Translink’s Bus Shelter Improvement Programme, which last year introduced the first-ever living green roofs to shelters in Northern Ireland. The initiative marked the beginning of an innovative approach to combining improved passenger facilities with sustainable design.

Jonathan Elliott, Translink Project Manager, said: “These new designs are about making the shelters even more attractive for passengers while sharing the positive environmental story behind them. The flowers and butterflies on the signage tie in perfectly with the green roofs above, and the QR codes make it simple for people to explore our wider sustainability plans. It’s a small change that makes a big impact.”

Stuart Findley, Head Gardener at the Act Initiative Shankill Community Garden, added: “The shelters have become a real talking point in the community, and the new signage makes them stand out even more. Translink’s ongoing support has been invaluable for our garden and the wider neighbourhood, helping people see the importance of creating green spaces in the city.”

The shelters, the first of their kind in Northern Ireland, continue to provide important habitats for pollinators while improving the look and feel of the local area. The addition of the new signage is part of Translink’s ongoing efforts to combine practical passenger infrastructure with creative, environmentally friendly design.
