Sustainable Community Buildings - Business In The Community

The National Lottery Community Fund aims to create a healthier and happier society and acknowledges that social connections and community activities are at the heart of this. In a move towards enacting bolder change in the coming years, the Sustainable Community Buildings Project is funding community-led projects which support the implementation of sustainable practices and foster environmental responsibility across the sector.

About the Sustainable Community Buildings project

Business in the Community NI (BITC) will deliver accredited Carbon Literacy Training as part of The National Lottery Community Fund’s Sustainable Community Buildings project, which helps voluntary and community organisations in Northern Ireland to be environmentally sustainable.

Training begins in May 2024 with subsequent cohorts being delivered in January and April 2025. The next steps of the programme involve participants taking action on what they have learned, to improve the environmental performance of their building, save money through lower utility bills, and reduce their carbon footprint.

Funding up to £50,000 (capital funding only) is available to voluntary or community organisations in Northern Ireland with an annual income of less than £500,000. The deadline for application depends on the council area. Click here to find out more.

This funding helps organisations to:

  • learn how to be more environmentally sustainable – by attending Business in the Community’s Carbon Literacy Training
  • understand what changes you can make to be more environmentally sustainable – by working with experts in sustainability to create an environment plan for your organisation
  • improve the environmental performance of your building – for example, funding so that you can add solar panels, improve insulation or install energy-efficient lighting
  • share the benefits of being more environmentally sustainable with your community
  • monitor, measure and report on the impact of your funding – for example, track what difference the improvements have made to carbon emissions, energy savings, community engagement and behaviour change
  • ultimately reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills.

Business in the Community’s role

Our role is to deliver accredited Carbon Literacy Training to representatives from the voluntary community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector in Northern Ireland, which is an important first step on any organisation’s sustainability journey. This Training has been designed to raise awareness of the core elements of Carbon Literacy, as well as explore the opportunities, risks and challenges that climate change will present to the VCSE sector specifically.
