Local organisations will raise revenue for Action Cancer by taking over charity shops on Thursday 15 September for an Apprenticeship-style challenge
Nine Northern Ireland organisations are gearing up to get creative and take over the running of an Action Cancer charity shop on Thursday 15 September 2016.
This marks the fourth year of Business in the Community’s Care Shops’ Challenge, in partnership with Action Cancer, which has raised a staggering £250,000 for the charity’s cancer protection, detection and support services to date.
Hilary Hanberry, Volunteering Manager from Business in the Community explains: “Over 150 volunteers from various businesses across Northern Ireland will use their entrepreneurial skills, business acumen and years of collective experience to increase donations, footfall and sales at their particular shop.
“The companies involved are committed to doing business responsibly, and this employer supported volunteering challenge offers multiple benefits – enabling employees to take on and project manage the challenge, use their skills and wits to fundraise, get creative in managing and promoting ‘their’ shop and raising awareness of Action Cancer’s services throughout Northern Ireland. It’s hard work but great fun. Whether your style is fashion forward like Lady Gaga, more subtle like Dame Helen Mirren or princess perfect like Kate Middleton, our busy teams cater for everyone’s tastes. Come along to your local store on the day and you’ll be able to pick up an outfit for under a tenner and come out catwalk ready.”
Companies taking part include: Allen & Overy, Centra, Department for the Economy, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Hughes Insurance, Hutchinson Homes, Marks & Spencer, NI Housing Executive and St Cecilia’s College. If you’d like to turn your fashion disaster into fashion fantastic, whilst supporting a good cause, come along to your nearest store on Thursday 15 September and grab a bargain!
Peter Lynch, Action Cancer’s Retail Operations Manager commented: “The Cares Shops’ Challenge provides a unique opportunity for Action Cancer Retail. Every penny raised during the challenge stays within Northern Ireland to provide free services to local people including; breast screening to women aged 40-49 and 70 plus, and complementary therapies and counselling to anyone impacted by cancer.
“The Shops’ Challenge is a serious business test, with a little friendly competition between the organisations involved. We will announce the winners at a special celebration lunch at the Ramada Hotel, Shaw’s Bridge on Friday 7 October. It’s a great opportunity for us to recognise the efforts and activities of each of the teams and say thank you to all involved.
“Whether you’re part of a team participating in the challenge, supporting work colleagues that are taking part, live close to one of the shops, or are simply on the lookout for a bargain, you can be part of this year’s Cares Shops’ Challenge and help to raise vital funds to support our cancer prevention, detection and support services.”
The shops involved in this year’s challenge are; Ormeau Road, Lisburn Furniture, Something Different (Lisburn Road), Lisburn Boutique, Bangor Boutique, Derry/Londonderry, Newry, Ballyclare and Belmont Road.
