The Radiography Work Experience Day was created to give school students a unique, hands-on opportunity to explore the profession, inspire future careers, and showcase the vital role Radiographers play in patient care.

Why did I organise the Radiography Work Experience Day?
I regularly received interest from enthusiastic school students seeking work experience in Radiography. However, arranging single-day placements proved challenging due to indemnity insurance requirements and the fact that university students are on placement for most of the year. This made it difficult for the department to provide adequate supervision and ensure a meaningful experience.
Recognising this recurring interest, I identified a need to create an opportunity for school students to learn about the profession before applying to the course. My goal was to design something special and unique—an experience that truly showcases the variety and importance of Radiography and why it is such a rewarding career. To achieve this, I selected a date when no university students were on site and organised a dedicated Work Experience Day for 20 students, highlighting the incredible scope of the profession.
Why is it important for school students to gain an opportunity like this?
It is vital for school students to see Radiography in action, meet teams across different specialities (MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and more), and understand the crucial role Radiographers play in patient care. Experiences like this can inspire future career choices and help students appreciate the skill, technology, and diversity behind modern medical imaging.
This day was all about inspiring the next generation and showcasing the exceptional work Radiographers do every day.
Was the event a success?
Absolutely—it was a huge success! I want to thank the entire Work Inspiration team, especially Ruth, whose support made this day possible. I also extend my gratitude to all the Radiology department staff who represented the profession so enthusiastically. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive: every student reported having a fantastic experience and praised the friendliness and approachability of the staff. This reflects the outstanding individuals within the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust’s Radiology department.
Finally, thank you to the students for their engagement and curiosity throughout the day. I truly hope we will see many of them as future Radiography students!
