The Bridge to a Second Chance: Inclusive Hiring Starts with Banning the Box
by Dr Lisa McIlvenna, Managing Director, Business in the Community Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, we often talk about the power of a second chance. But for many people, that chance is cut short before they even have an opportunity to introduce themselves.
Imagine you have the skills, qualifications, and a deep desire to work. You find the perfect job, but the very first page of the application asks: “Do you have a criminal record?” You tick the box, and more often than not, your application is discarded immediately. To many, that box isn’t just a question; it’s a closed door.
What is “Ban the Box”?
At its core, Ban the Box is a campaign calling on employers to remove the criminal convictions tick box from the initial stage of job applications. By moving this question further down the recruitment process, employers can judge a candidate on their talents and potential first.
Why does this matter for Northern Ireland?
The Scale: Every year, over 31,000 people in Northern Ireland are convicted in court or given an out-of-court disposal. (Source: NIAO, 2023)
The Revolving Door: Without intervention, the system fails. 52% of people leaving short-term prison sentences in NI reoffend within a year. The single most effective way to break this cycle? A stable job. (Source: NIAO, 2023)
The Economy: In Northern Ireland alone, our members have already opened up over 63,000 roles by Banning the Box, helping to tackle the local skills shortage (BITC NI).
The Cost: Reoffending costs the UK economy billions every year. By providing employment, we are investing in a safer, more prosperous society. (Ministry of Justice)
Moving from Policy to Practice: The Bridge
Opening the door is the first step, but we knew businesses needed more support to make inclusive hiring a long-term success. This led to the launch of The Bridge.
The Bridge is our dedicated employers’ forum in Northern Ireland. It acts as a “community of practice” where business leaders can:
- Share honest experiences about hiring people with convictions.
- Navigate the legal and safeguarding complexities of inclusive hiring.
- Learn from community organisations and justice partners.
If Ban the Box is about opening the door, The Bridge is about building the hallway—providing the structure and support needed for both the employer and the employee to thrive.
